Now is the time to check our beehives to make sure they have enough food to last the remainder of winter. Before the cold hit in the late fall, we put bakers sugar on the top of the inner cover of our 2 hives. Now we check the hives and add additional sugar as necessary.
I can’t find bakers sugar in our little town anymore, so instead I made a candy fondant using this recipe. Hard candy is a good way to feed bees in the winter without overly stimulating brood production.
When we checked the hives, one hive still had 3/4 of the bakers sugar left on top of the inner cover. In the second hive the sugar from the fall was almost all gone. We slipped a fondant patty under the outer cover where the bees could get to it.
We didn’t put on our bee suits to open the hives, but we should have! Our Carniolan bees are way more aggressive than the Italian bees we have had in the past. We were surprised by how aggressive they were.
Both hives look great. We just have to make sure they don’t run out of food before the dandelions and spring flowers bloom.
