My baby is nearing 6 months old – how does that happen so fast! My little boy is now in the active baby stage – experimenting with rolling, laughing at his brothers, and squirming constantly. As we transitioned from the newborn stage, I wanted to share a few of my favorite supplies.
There are so many baby gadgets and baby supplies out there. It is difficult to know what you really need or is worth the money. I think that you can do without most things, but there are definitely a few items that make life a lot easier! Here are a few of the products I have loved as a mom.
Fisher Price Rock ‘n’ Play – We bought this for our 4th child to use as a bassinet his first few months, and I love it. A newborn baby likes to feel cuddled and cozy, and this provides that. It is great to have a place to put him that is off the floor (to protect him from his brothers!). It is light and easy to move around the house when I want to keep him close. Our 4th child has been our best sleeper, and I contribute part of that to this Rock ‘n’play! It folds up, so I can toss it in the car to go on day trips. I did not get the kind with an automatic rocking, but I think he would have liked that too. We bought ours on Amazon for under $50! (I found one here for $29!)
Baby Wrap – With baby #3 I made a super simple baby wrap out of fabric. This is a lifesaver for moms with multiple young children! It is so helpful to be able to hold my baby & have a free hand to help my toddler. I use it around the house, at the grocery store, and outings with the kids. My 2 youngest have loved being snuggled up in the wrap as an infant. They typically fall asleep while they are being carried. You can buy similar ones (Like this Boba wrap), but mine is just a yard and a half of fabric cut in 17″ strips and sewn together to make one long strip. I prefer this type of wrap for the first 3-6 months. After that I us an Ergo Carrier (like this one). The Ergo distributes the weight to your hips, so it is much more comfortable once the baby start getting heavy! The Ergo carriers can be a little pricey, but if you watch, you can find them on sale on Amazon or sites like Zulily for around $60. You can also check a 2nd hand baby supply store. My friend recently bought a gently used one for under $20!
Thermometer – These temporal thermometers are my favorite. It makes checking a babies (or squirmy toddlers!) temperature a cinch. In that moment when you have a sad, grumpy, sickly child and you are trying to decide if medication or a doctors visit is required, holding a thermometer under the arm pit until it beeps is not an easy. I was too cheap to buy one as a new mom, but my mother-in-law has one. After using it a few times, I was sold. The convenience is worth the $30 to me!
What are your favorite newborn baby supplies? I am always looking for good, useful gifts for baby showers!
